The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a forum for the run-off candidates for the At-Large Oakland City Council Seat at 7p Friday evening, Oct. 3 at City Hall Hearing Room 1.  Come hear the candidates talk about their vision for development of Oakland, improving opportunities for Oakland's youth, reducing crime, etc and show your support for Community Choice.

The candidates are Rebecca Kaplan and Kerry Hammil. Neither candidate has yet indicated whether they support Community Choice as a way to bring more renewable energy and green jobs to Oakland and reduce GHG emissions.

With your help, we hope to show the candidates that Community Choice is a hot issue in Oakland and get them to take a stand for Community Choice. We have worked behind the scenes with the host so that there will be a question on renewable energy and Community Choice.  There will also be media coverage. We want to show visible support for Community Choice at the forum, and will hand out "I support Community Choice" stickers and flyers explaining the program.

Please let us know if you are able to attend and/or help "sticker" people as they head into the forum.  RSVP to janlcg (at) gmail.

Feeling unsure about the two energy-related state propositions - Prop 7
(Renewable Energy Generation) and Prop 10 (Alternative Fuel Vehicles
and Renewable Energy Bonds)?

Come learn more at this month's
meeting which includes a discussion on these propositions with voter
education by Suzanne Loosen of the League of Woman Voters. Suzanne is a
sustainability consultant and well versed in energy issues.  The league
provides voter eduction to increase understanding of major public
policy issues.

We will also have a report back on an excellent
Community Choice conference that several members of the alliance
attended in San Rafael as well as our latest organizing success at the
Berkeley Energy Commission meeting last month.

Please RSVP to daveroom @ gmail so we have an accurate count for food. Thank you!

Please forward to interested parties...

Berkeley Planning Commission Meeting
Wednesday, October 15th, 8 to 10 pm
North Berkeley Senior Center
1901 Hearst Ave. (at MLK Way), Berkeley

We just got word that the Planning Commission meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Oct. 15) is starting late. The meeting now starts at 8pm. The discussion of the transportation and land use elements of the Climate Action Plan will likely occur around 8:45pm.

This is a critical meeting for our efforts. A strong turnout would bode well for Community Choice in the Berkeley Climate Action plan. As it now stands, Community Choice Energy is NOT the City's recommended course of action for greening the grid.  According to the latest draft of the plan, Berkeley is considering the possibility of "working" with PG&E to increase their renewable energy portfolio. We know this will NOT work! We need to make Community Choice Energy the ONE and ONLY option for getting more clean, reliable, affordable energy on the grid.  There will be an opportunity to give public comment.

Join Us... We will have signs, stickers, and flyers.  Please RSVP with Jan at jan@baylocalize.org if you will attend and/or can help offer folks "I Support Community Energy" stickers as they head into the meeting.

Join us for the Oakland Public Works Meeting - Tuesday Oct 28, 12:15-1p!

The negative staff report is now going before the Oakland Public Works Committee on Tuesday, October 28 at 12:30 pm, at City Hall. We are meeting in front of city hall at 12:15p.  Without a good turnout, the possibility of Community Choice goes away for a long time in Oakland.

We need a strong show of support to ask that Community Choice be given a closer examination with an expanded public review process.  Please join us in the audience.

Community Choice is at the top of the agenda and we expect that you could be finished before 1p. We know that daytime meetings are difficult, but we really need you voice now.  So if you think you can probably make it, please call (510) 834-0420 or email jan@baylocalize.org to let us know.
