Marin County Supervisor Charles McGlashan says that Community Choice Energy is their most effective policy option for reducing greenhouse gases and creating business opportunities for their local green businesses. To implement Community Choice, they have set up Marin Clean Energy. They are currently doing community meetings and study sessions in towns across Marin with the intention of getting enough cities aboard to create a Joint Powers Authority for Community Choice in December 2008.

This month, the Communications Coordinator of Marin Clean Energy - John Corcoran - will speak to us about Marin's strategy, structure, and public outreach initiatives.

Please RSVP to daveroom@gmail.com so we have an accurate count for food. Thank you!

Please forward to interested parties...

In late September, Sacramento plays host to the world's largest conference on one of the most important societal issues of our time - Peak Oil. In late September, the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas - USA (ASPO-USA) is convening its 2008 Peak Oil Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Sacramento, California. The conference title - The Peak Oil Energy Challenge - The Future Starts Now! - says it all; it's time for us to take control of our energy future and start dealing with our oil and energy predicaments.

I imagine ASPO-USA chose Sacramento since California is leading the nation in laws for renewable energy and combating global warming, thereby providing a model for other states. Perhaps if Peak Oil mitigation can get some traction in the California, it can also speed up action on the federal level which tends to be slower than molasses.

The conference features top international energy experts including as Dennis Hayes (the Father of Earth Day), Jim Kunstler (featured in the End of Suburbia), Randy Udall (Co-founder of ASPO-USA); Matt Simmons (Founder of Simmons & Company, Intl.); Jim Puplava (Financial Sense News Hour); Tom Whipple (Editor of Peak Oil Review and Peak Oil News); Kjell Aleklett (President, ASPO-International); Nate Hagens of The Oil Drum, and many others. Note that the Sunday Sessions are on track to sell out, so you may want to make plans to attend sooner than later.

In the run up to the conference, ASPO-USA is also launching a new program called Peak Oil Pioneers which honors people have been early supporters of the Peak Oil movement.

Whether you are an oil baron or baroness, environmentalist or public official, small-business owner or Fortune 500 executive, your inclusion on this list speaks volumes about you and your commitment to our work. As a Peak Oil Pioneer, you represent the ASPO-USA members, donors, and sponsors who stand on the crest of Hubbert's Curve. You dare to look beyond the status quo. But where there is honest inquiry, research, education, cooperation, and intelligent response, there is well-founded hope. When you get involved to make our collective work possible, you make hope possible. The co-founders, board, advisory board and staff of ASPO-USA are grateful for your courageous foresight and your generous support. If you're already a Member, Donor, Sponsor or Supporter, please accept our sincere gratitude for helping to make our work possible. And then, if possible, dig deeper and give again, in another category, or as a conference sponsor, and be recognized even further on our Peak Oil Pioneers website.

A revised draft of the Berkeley Climate Action Plan is being released for community review and comment this Thursday, September 18.  Access and comment on the report online at the City's climate action website: www.BerkeleyClimateAction.org

If you are available, please show up at a workshop at City Council Chambers on the Climate Action Plan on Tuesday, September 23 from 5:30-7 pm.  The workshop is an opportunity to learn how the plan has been revised (based on community comments) and to voice your initial feedback on this latest draft.

At this point, we don't know if Community Choice is in the Climate Action plan.  Please show up and let the Berkeley City Council know that you think Community Choice is one of the best ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation, and belongs in Berkeley's Climate Action Plan.

TALKING POINTS:

  • Marin County found that Community Choice is its most cost-effective option for addressing climate change, as the greenhouse gas emissions reductions are funded by electricity bills.
  • Community Choice belongs in Berkeley's Climate Action Plan, and should be implemented as quickly as possible to give residents a choice to buy more renewable energy.
  • If small cities such as Alameda can successfully purchase energy on the state market to offer its residents cheaper and greener electricity than PG&E, why not Berkeley?

Please RSVP to janlcg@gmail.com to let us know that you will support Community Choice in the Berkeley Climate Action Plan.

Do you want to be able to choose to buy more renewable electricity to power your home or business? Community Choice makes that possible, and it needs your support.

All we need you to do is show up on Wednesday, September 24th for the Berkeley Energy Commission meeting, which convenes at 1901 Hearst Avenue in the North Berkeley Senior Center at 5:30 pm.

Community Choice is on the agenda. The meeting starts at 5:30 pm and public comment is at the beginning of the agenda. If you are so inclined, you could also speak briefly on why Berkeley should move forward with Community Choice (see Talking Points below).  You can even read your notes into the public record if you like. Starting around 6 pm, Dawn Weisz of Marin Clean Energy and Dave Room of the Local Clean Energy Alliance will speak on Community Choice. The Community Choice item will end at 6:30 pm. To learn more about Community Choice Energy, click here.

The Berkeley Energy Commission is under the impression that there is little public support for Community Choice Energy in Berkeley. Please join the Local Clean Energy Alliance in letting them know we see Community Choice as the best option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the renewable content of our electricity. We the people of the East Bay have unfortunately allowed the incumbent investor-owned utility to control our power and lock us into gas-fired power plants and costly nuclear power. It's time to change that!

Please RSVP to janlcg@gmail.com let us know that you will show up for Community Choice in Berkeley.

TALKING POINTS FOR PUBLIC COMMENT:

  • PG&E is not going to make its 2010 renewable energy goal of 20%
  • PG&E is opposed to a renewable energy goal of 33% for 2020
  • AB32 will likely require cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020
  • Community Choice is one of the most cost effective ways cities can meet that requirement
  • Berkeley consumers and businesses want to be able to choose their electrical provider.
  • If small cities such as Alameda can successfully purchase energy on the state market to offer its residents cheaper and greener electricity than PG&E, why not Berkeley?
