Say NO to PG&E's anti-clean energy ballot initiative at Berkeley City Council meeting.
On Tuesday, September 22 between 7-8 pm, the Berkeley City Council will consider a resolution that would oppose one of the sneakiest moves to date to undermine local, clean energy.
A proposed statewide ballot measure financed by PG&E would require a 2/3 majority approval of local utility customers before allowing municipalities to buy and sell energy.
SAY NO TO PG&E's DIRTY TACTICS!
The "New Two-Thirds Requirement for Local Public Electricity Providers" is a backdoor attempt to submarine Community Choice Aggregation (CCA), which allows communities to buy power in bulk, save money, and promote renewable energy. It would also set a dangerous precedent whereby a private corporation can use the ballot process to add restrictions on how municipalities use their revenue bond authority.
If you are available, please attend Tuesday's Berkeley City Council meeting and tell them that local clean energy is a requirement, not an option. Since this item is on the consent calendar only three people will be able to speak. It also means that the item will likely be finished by 8p, so it is a commitment of just an hour of your time. As the state's budget woe's have shown, 2/3 is the magic number for legislative gridlock, especially when people are still learning what CCA is and how it will save money and reduce greenhouse gasses.
If you can attend, please contact Dave Room (dave@baylocalize.org) for more information. first come, first served as there is limit of only three speakers :) It’s up to us to show the rest of Bay Area, California, and the nations that consumers are voicing their demands LOUD and CLEAR!
If you can’t make it, please call your council member and ask them to support the Resolution opposing the proposed California statewide initiative “New Two-Thirds Requirement for Local Public Electricity Providers. Thanks!
