Haf-time Organizer

The Local Clean Energy Alliance (LCEA) is the Bay Area's largest clean energy coalition, with 90 affiliated member organizations, including environmental justice, social justice, environmental, business, and community groups. The mission of the LCEA is to promote the equitable development and democratization of local renewable energy resources as key to addressing climate change and building sustainable and resilient communities.

The LCEA seeks a motivated half-time staff Organizer to provide key assistance with our advocacy for Community Choice energy programs. We’re looking for a skilled clean energy organizer who is politically savvy, creative, a strategic thinker, and passionate about the environment and social justice. This position is based at the office of the LCEA’s host organization, Bay Localize*, in downtown Oakland and is supervised by the LCEA Coordinator.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Reaching out and engaging organizations in support of local clean energy programs
• Organizing meetings of advocate organizations and activists through sending out reminders and agendas, following up with attendees by phone, creating and printing handouts, taking minutes, and securing the meeting space and other logistical tasks
• Facilitating consensus and strengthening advocacy through strategic and tactical planning, following-up on decisions made at meetings, and interacting with public decision makers, as needed
• Composing and sending email communications to LCEA members and others and providing timely updates to the LCEA web site and Facebook page
• Collaborating with the LCEA Coordinator and staff, Steering Committee, volunteers, and others in carrying out the LCEA’s programs, as needed
• Representing LCEA on phone and in-person at events
• Participating in regular LCEA staff meetings

Qualifications:

• A passion for the equity and justice perspective of the LCEA
• A quick learner who is interested in local renewable energy systems, sustainable development, community resilience, and their relationship to social justice
• Experience working with people from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
• Experience working with organizations and/or coalitions based in low-income communities of color
• Responsible, very organized, and detail-oriented
• Good written and verbal communication and people skills, in-person and on the phone
• Ability to manage multiple tasks at once and independently carry out tasks
• Available 20 hours/week (including some evenings) for a minimum of 7 months, through June 2015
• Bachelors Degree or at least two years equivalent organizing experience in environmental or energy issues, public health, social justice, community or labor organizing, or related field
