East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative Kicks Off!

On Saturday, November 10, Local Clean Energy Alliance joined nearly one hundred East Oakland residents for the East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative Kick-off event at Allen Temple Baptist Church. East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative, EONI for short, is a partnership between the City of Oakland and thirteen community-based organizations (including Local Clean Energy Alliance) focused on community-driven planning to build the health, wealth, and stability of East Oakland.

At the kickoff event, Local Clean Energy Alliance hosted a Clean Power to the People breakout session focused on opportunities that our new public electricity services provider, East Bay Community Energy, makes possible, from developing community-owned and controlled solar projects in East Oakland, saving money on electricity bills through household energy efficiency and access to solar, and clean energy jobs in energy efficiency and solar installation. Over the next six months, the Alliance will participate in neighborhood meetings to hear from community members about their priorities in clean energy for economic empowerment, climate resilience, and environmental health.

Funded by a Transformative Climate Communities Planning Grant from California’s Strategic Growth Council, EONI will build upon the current work and programs of many neighborhood groups, community-based organizations, public agencies, and individuals in six Deep East Oakland neighborhoods to create an actionable, community-driven plan. The EONI team will use this plan to apply for $20-30 million for implementation.
